Choose Gang Free serves youth across Salt Lake County who are showing signs of gang involvement or are already connected to that lifestyle. Every young person in our program is paired with a skilled and caring case manager who uses proven, evidence-based strategies to help them build new skills, make positive choices, and create a safer future. We also work closely with families to connect them to wraparound services and community resources, ensuring that support extends beyond the individual to the entire home environment.
Secondary Prevention Program
Youth who qualify for our Secondary Prevention Program must be enrolled at one of our participating schools. Students in this program take part in lessons from our evidence-based curriculum, focusing on Life Skills and Social and Emotional Learning. Each youth is paired with a Choose Gang Free Advocate, meeting weekly to build positive connections, strengthen decision-making, and stay on track with school attendance and graduation.
Intervention Program
Our Intervention Program supports youth referred from participating schools, Juvenile Justice Youth Services (JJYS), Probation, or other state and county partners. Participants meet weekly with an Advocate for at least one hour to work through lessons from our evidence-based curriculum designed to address at-risk or gang-involved behaviors. Each youth receives an individualized case plan developed in collaboration with families, school administrators, probation officers, and case managers. To complete the program, youth must successfully finish a minimum of 12 weeks of participation.
Graduates then transition into our Aftercare Program, where they are paired with a Mentor who continues to guide them through Life Skills, Social and Emotional Learning, school success, and preparation for employment or higher education. At Choose Gang Free, we believe every young person deserves a second chance and a supportive path forward. Our programs are designed to empower youth to make positive choices, build meaningful connections, and create a safer, brighter future for themselves and their communities.
